It's That Time Again!

It's General Conference time again

and time for the Barfuss men to get together

to go to the Saturday night Priesthood Conference

This activity is a highlight for Grandpa

and he is looking forward to it again!

The broadcast of the meeting begins at 6:00 p.m.

and Grandpa would like to be there in plenty of time

We'll be having the traditional Banana splits

after the conference so ladies and girls

come any time and visit and then we'll

have ice cream with the guys after the meeting.

Midvale's Most Beautiful Yard!

Thanks to our wonderful family

Grandpa and Grandma Barfuss have the most

beautiful yard in Midvale!

All your hard work at our FHE work party has

made it possible for us to keep the lawn edged,

the flower beds weeded and the trimmed shrubs flowering.

The flowers have never been more beautiful!

Even a family of quail made their nest

in the corner of the back yard.

We scared the mother off the nest long enough

to get this picture.

We'll be happy when they are hatched so we can

clean up that corner.

Our vegetable garden is beginning to produce.

We've picked chard and zucchini,

there are green tomatoes

and the beans are beginning to blossom.

The new fence is wonderful and it's fun

planting new flowers and shrubs in front of it.

It looks like the grape vine will even produce this year

The lawn is perfectly edged.

Our apple tree has never been prettier.

Kitt is a real pro at trimming trees!

Someone said it looks like it could be in the

Garden of Eden!

After a good trim by Erica and Laura,

even the yucca have never been more beautiful!

FHE Work Party...Great Success!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for helping us get our yard

spiffed up for spring!

We could not have done it without you!

It is so great to have everything in the yard done at once.

Marv and Mary Ellen would never have

gotten that old tree down without Andy's persistence

The old fence is gone and a new one is in it's place.

Everyone pitched in with full energy!

Even the neighbors got in the act.

The rain held off with just a drizzle.

The little kids helped too and enjoyed a skittle break

Natalie and Kimmy prepared a cute FHE lesson

on service that was so appropriate for the occassion.

The 30 ft. dumpster was filled to the top when they

picked it up today.

(there was room for neighbors to get rid of junk too)

Tasks were done that have been waiting for years.

After so much hard work everyone was ready for

sloppy Joe's and salad.

Thanks again for all your help!

It was good to see everyone!

Jessica has a unique way of keeping everything together

The white elephant gifts were as crazy as ever.

The coveted fantasy football trophy was awarded to Todd Barfuss
the champion for 2010. Too bad he wasn't there to get it.

The Barfuss family Fantasy Football Commissioner, Brandon Beck,
presented the trophy via the internet from Phoenix

Grandpa enjoyed visiting with the Wilfardo's one on one
in his bedroom. The visits really cheered him up!

there are many conflicting activities
vying for our time....
We just seem to want to do it all...
but it's impossible to be in two places at once
SO...
with scheduled baptisms, moves to Arizona, temple sealings
and a hundred other things
we're having to cancel the Farmington Picnic
which was scheduled for Saturday July 31,2010.

Thanks to Andy and Julie for inviting us to come
to their lovely backyard...maybe next year.
In the meantime we look forward to seeing everyone
at the upcoming weddings.

Wilfardo Wedding shower
to help them get ready.

We will have a salad bar supper,
tie a quilt for each of the brides,

Another Great Memorial Day!

The Barfuss Memorial Day Celebration
just gets bigger and better.
New members are joining the clan
as weddings and new babies keep our numbers growing.
There were 47 who joined us today.
Kitt Graciously took the picture.

Alison and Todd will be married in September.

Liz and Duncan Glenn are expecting
a new baby in October.

Nick and Denise were married May 15th
Denise is holding Jenn and Jared's cute little Cory.

Spencer and Sydney will be getting Married July 29th

Can you tell that these guys are related?

Everyone helped prepare a hearty breakfast
of Scrambled eggs, sausages, hash browns, pancakes,
fresh fruit, juice and milk.
Everyone seemed to get enough to eat!
Thanks everyone for preparing a great breakfast.
And a special thanks for cleaning everything
up so well!

The little ones love being together with their cousins
around the little table.

The four square games seem to get more complicated
and exciting and noisy every year.
One thing for sure....the Barfuss' are a competitive bunch
and they sure seem to have FUN!
We missed everyone who couldn't be here.
Maybe next year!

Memorial Day...Monday May 31st

We'll gather at the Midvale Cemetery
at 9:00 a.m.

Then we'll go to Grandpa and Grandma's
for breakfast

Denise's Shower

It didn't take long to tie
the traditional Barfuss quilt for
Denise and Nick.
Many hands make quick work!

We enjoyed a delicious brunch together.
Again...many hands make light work!
Thanks everyone for bringing such tasty food.
Several asked for the Quiche recipe.
We'll publish it below.

Nick appeared in time to help transport
the nice gifts home and to
remove the ribbons from Denise's hair

Ham and Cheese Quiche
(Grandma Sally's Version)

2 unbaked pie shells
Bake the empty pie shells in a 425 degree oven for 5 minutes
Remove the shells and cool slightly
Turn the oven down to 350 degrees

8 eggs slightly beaten
1 cup half and half cream
1- 1/2 cups milk
1 tsp dry mustard mixed with 1 Tb. water
1/4 tsp salt
1/8 tsp. pepper
Mix well...this is enough liquid for 2 pies

Into each baked pie shell layer...
1/2 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
1/2 cup grated swiss cheese
1/2 cup finely diced ham
2 Tbs. sliced green onion

(Optional additions)
Mushrooms Sauteed in 1 Tb. butter
Red or green pepper finely chopped
!/4 cup canned french fried onions

Place the pies on a foil covered baking sheet
Pour the egg/milk mixture carefully
over the layers of cheese and ham etc.
Bake in a 350 degree oven 45 minutes until firm
(can be tested with a toothpick)
Remove from the oven and cool at least 20 minutes
before cutting into wedges.
(Can be made the day before
and kept in the fridge
and heated when ready to serve
This actually helps the flavors to intermix
and is much easier to cut when cold)

after the meeting for our traditional banana splits.

Apple Pickin' Time

We have a bumper crop of Golden Delicious apples

and they're almost ready to pick.

The limbs are so loaded that Grandpa

has had to prop them up with boardsThey are pretty good now, but the experts say
they'll be even better if we get a light frost....

and that is predicted for tomorrow so.....

by next week they should be in their prime.

There are tons more than we will ever use so come by

on Saturday October 10th and pick yourself a box full.

A Wedding to Remember!

Congratulations Josh and Kat. We are so happy for you!

We enjoyed visiting while we waited for the ceremony to begin.

Heidi looked wonderful even though she felt crummy...

Mason had a great time too.

Tylie was a darling flower girl. She did such a good job.

She was not one bit shy about the whole thing

Lots of beautiful children enjoyed getting to know each other.

The money dance was a highlight of the evening. Kat performed a beautiful dance just for Josh!

The music was loud and had a beat that couldn't be resisted. Even Heidi, who felt crummy couldn't keep from dancing!

Another Great Reunion!

The "Kick Off" Bar-B-Q at the Becks started the runion off with a bang.

There was plenty of good food, fun activities and lots of visiting.

The late night movie and sleep-over was an added bonus.

The setting at the Midvale Park couldn't have been more perfect.

The temperature, the privacy, the tasty food, the fun games, and just being together

made it ideal.

Our bowling activity was exciting as the cooperative, competitive nature of

the Barfuss genes was exhibited.

The guy at the bowling alley was a bit overwhelmed with our enthusiasm.

It was especially fun to watch the little ones with their first bowling experience.

It was so nice to be in the comfortable air conditioned bowling alley on a very hot

August first afternoon!

Our service project at Aunt Mary's condo was unbelievable.

The energy and strength of youth united in a common purpose

exemplified the spirit of service in every way!

Thank you, thank you!

The younger ones went swimming at the West Jordan pool

while the older ones worked.

Another delicious meal finished off the reunion.

The Wasden's back yard was shady and cool--

a perfect setting.

Many hands make light work. Visiting and stitching put the binding

on the quilt for Josh and Kat.

A rousing game of Volleyball was the icing on the cake

to a fun filled reunion.

It's amazing that anyone had any energy left after a day of work and play!

Having the reunion "at home" made it possible for more family members to participate.

Those who had to work were able to make it to at least some of the activities.

A big thank you to Stacie for her efforts in making the 2009 reunion THE BEST!

We met at the Midvale Cemetery as usual on Memorial Day morning

and enjoyed being together

and sharing information and feelings about Grandma LaRue

and about being a family.

The annual Four Square game was as intense and competitive as usual.

The Perfect Wedding!

Kandis's Mission has begun!

Wednesday May 6, 2009---Kandis's Mission begins today! She is excited to get ready to

enter the MTC!
We enjoyed a special "Family Home Morning" where Kevin, Kandis' Stake President, set her apart as a Missionary.
Jake, Kandis and Courtney blended their voices together in a musical testimony.
Each member of the Lythgoe family, as well as Grandpa and Grandma Barfuss and Grandpa and Grandma Lythgoe, bore sweet testimonies and shared favorite missionary scriptures.
The Spirit was strong and grateful tears were shed
as Kandis commits the next 18 months to the Lord.
We are so proud of her!

The Lythgoe Siblings enjoyed a group hug as the meeting concluded.

Everyone is ready to travel to the Provo MTC.

Kitt's New Hip

Kitt had hip replacement surgery on Thursday March 19th

He is recovering at home and is doing very well.

The doctors performed a new procedure on him that

will enable him to be back to work in a couple of weeks.

Instead of cutting through the muscles, on the side of his leg

they went in through the front and just moved the muscles aside

while they removed the worn out hip and replaced it with a new one.

What marvelous age we live in!

We're glad that the surgery is over and

pray for a speedy and complete recovery!

A Good Time Was Had by All!

The Lythgoe's came from Arizona so we had a party

to celebrate Kandis' Mission Call

to the New York, New York North Mission.

All the Barfuss families were represented.

The Kids love being together.

There were about 50 Barfuss' at the party!

The table was laden with lots of food.

No one went away hungry.
Kandis received much good advise from her

returned missionary cousins!

The Wasden family would like to proudly announce that Chad will graduate from medical school in may and will be heading on on a new adventure to do his residency. We were able to attend a special breakfast this morning given to all the medical students that "matched" (or chosen to do their residency by a hospital that they had interviewed with ) and the students were all given their letters that would dictate the next three years of their lives. We all stood around with our cameras poised and our knees shaking. We have been waiting for this moment to come for 8 years but it was strange for it to finally be here. Drum roll please.......

The Lost is Found!

Last week I opened the closet door under the stairs to show a plumber where a water pipe was and there, on the little shelf just inside the door, was our camera that has been missing since the adult Wilfardo Christmas party. It must have found it's way there when we were putting the folding chairs away after the party!

So now we have two Canon Powershot cameras-- a silver one and a gray one. One for Grandpa and one for Grandma. We're happy that we have the pictures from Christmas that were on the lost (but now found) camera.

Free Computer desk!

Since Grandma Sally has been having some vision problems we decided to upgrade our computer moniter to get a bigger screen so that it would be easier for her to read. We've got the new desk and now just have to get the right screen.

The old desk and printer stand is still sturdy and has some good use left in it. It just won't work with a larger screen. If you can use this computer desk give grandma a call and you can come a pick it up at your convenience. If we don't hear from anyone in a few days, we'll take it to the DI.

Hope someone can use it!

Well...Summer is right around the corner and the dates are starting to fill in. That's why we're here to inform you that the 2009 BARFUSS FAMILY REUNION will be held Thursday through Saturday, July 30th through August 1st. We're changing things up a bit, and staying closer to home. We'll be having a Barbeque, doing a sleep-over, enjoying a day of boating, playing a mean game of kick soccer at the park, etc. It will be a lot of fun. Grandpa Barfuss will be 87 years old on Wednesday February 11th!

We just came home from his annual check up with the Dr. and he passed 100%

And he's so handsome too!

How many people his age don't have any aches or pains

and don't take any medication?

He is in great shape--The Dr. says he'll probably live to be 107!

We'll be home all day and evening on Wednesday and have some birthday treats

for everyone who stops by.

If Wednesday isn't convenient, come any day, but be sure to call first to make sure we're home.

It was great to see Nick last evening at Jenn's place. He seems to have grown taller on his mission (or maybe we have shrunk). We look forward to hearing his report in Church on February 22nd. He looks great and hope that his visits to the doctor will put him in tip top shape. We are so proud of him. He has that "Missionary Glow"!

The Barfuss Family Garden

Our church leaders have admonished us to be frugal and prepared for difficult times.

Well, the difficult times are here!

We have been told to store food and to grow our own food if possible.

Heidi and Carl have invited Barfuss family members to share their garden spot in the pasture behind their house to grow a vegetable garden!

They have also suggested that if enough people are interested in buying a baby beef to grow to provide meat, they are willing to fence off part of their lot and raise our own meat!

Carl is in the process of planning the space and deciding how much ground needs to be tilled etc.

If you are interested in growing a family garden at the Wasden's let Heidi or Carl know by Grandpa's birthday--the 11th of February.

We have talked about each family having their own spot--decide what they will plant--plan for planting, weeding, cultivating, and harvesting etc. Those of us who are novices at gardening can learn much from the "experts" in the family.

Heidi even suggested that at harvest time we can have a group canning effort by making and canning our produce together using the our camp stoves!

There are many possibilities for fun gardening experiences together. Things are still in the planning stages so when we get together around Grandpa's birthday suggestions can be given and questions answered.

Let Heidi and Carl know if you are interested in the garden and in the beef project.

We would hope that by uniting together during the hard times---we can make them the good times.

Halloween with our cousins!

I just wanted to post a few pictures of the fun we had on Halloween. We were able to go see Aunt Jodie and all of our cousins. Jodie made sugar cookies so Tylie got to decorate a cookie while Brad, Nat, Allison, and Kimmy got to know Mason. Tylie was so excited to go see Kimmy and Natalie. She has never forgot how much fun she had with them at the reunion and never wants to miss a chance to play with them again. After we left Jodie we stopped by Aunt Julie's house to see Sadie's halloween costume. Thanks everyone for letting us come visit you. Tylie loved every minute of it and was ready to do it all over again Saturday morning. I unfortunately had to explain to her that we only get to go trick or treating one day a year. That was a tough disappoinment for her. I guess we all have to learn some tough things as a kid. Oh well... Just 363 days until we get to do it again. Hope you all had a great halloween.

Banana Split Bash!

It has been a tradition for several years now for Larry with his sons and sons-in-law and Andy and his sons to go to the general Priesthood meeting with Grandpa Barfuss at the stake center in Midvale and then come home after for banana splits. Last year some of the "girls" came to hang out while the men attended Priesthood meeting. It was so much fun that we did it again this year. The grandkids and great grandkids enjoy being together for a couple of hours. This gives the "womenfolk" a chance to get caught up on women stuff.

Larry's banana split masterpiece comes from years of experience.
It's always fun to take a picture of the three barfuss men. They seem to get more handsome with the passing years.
Natalie, Zoe and Kimmy know just when to say "cheese."
Brady was napping when everyone else was having a bite to eat so when he woke up Hailey fixed him a plate and "helped" him eat everything. She is such a little mother!
Grandp loves to have some one on one time with each of the grandkids!
This banana split tradition is one that Grandpa looks forward to every conference time!

Congratulations to Andrea and Jake and their new little baby boy born October 2, 2008. He weighed in at 8 pounds 3 ounces and is 19 inches long. He is beautiful and healthy. His name will be Mason Hancock. We're so happy for you! They are going home from the hospital tomorrow, then Tylie will know that he is really hers.

Fantasy Football

This is the post I know everyone has been waiting for. After weeks of anticipation wondering "What's going on with this fantasy football league that Grandma mentioned?" your answer is here. Long story short: everyone has experienced the joy that comes with victory...everyone except Rick Mason. Nate is dominating the league with an undefeated 4-0 record and Rick is doing his best to set himself up for the "most improved team" award given out at the end of every season. Adam is doing surprisingly well considering the fact that he picked Chris Cooley, a Tight End, in the first round. Competition is quite close and I'm sure there will be plenty to talk about at the "Adult Grandkids Christmas Party" this year.

Back to School Contest Winners!

Zoe and Andy seemed to have a special friendship going on at the Bear Lake Reunion. Andy can't resist a pretty face!

It was just a few short years ago when Andy returned from his mission in Japan. He couldn't resist that pretty face then either! Zoe is the spittin' image of her mommy!

As a new school year begins we are so proud of all of our Wilfardos and Wilfys as they eagerly go "Back to School"!
Did you know that there are Wilfardos and Wilfys on every educational level from pre-school to graduate school?

ok, so today was VERY interesting. We woke up early this morning, we drove to Puno at about 6:45. It was a 40 minute drive, and we went straight to the airport. This is where the, quote on quote ¨fun¨began. When we arrived, we all got shunted in a separate line because we were a big group, but it actually took LONGER than the other line!! then we still had to pay an airport fee of about 4 dollars or so in order to get on the plane, like we have the security tax. Anyway, so we made it through to the gate. When we boarded though, it turned out they had overbooked, and Will Love had to stay in Juliaca ( like the worst place in peru) until the 400 flight in the afternoon!!! but he had to wait, so we went on to lima. we checked into our hotel, then went to see the city.

We took taxis all over town it was hilarious, yet slightly sickening. The People here are insane!!! Nobody stays in their own lane, nobody blinkers, it is such a rush!!! On a 3 lane highway, we had 5 lanes going, it was nuts. we went to the main plaza, and we waited while everyone else drove up in their taxis. Everyone was coming at different times, (different drivers have different styles of driving: fast, really fast, and fast combined with recklessness.) so we were first there. We went to lunch together and got into some really stupid argument with a kid named Nate. He left the church about a year ago, and he really seems to have twisted views about what the church believes. Anyway, every time we have a debate with him, he ends up totally contradicting himself.

Well, after we went to the Catacombs in Lima and saw chamber full of the bones of dead priests and saints. There was one room where you could look down a well and there were skulls and bones aranged into patterns!! It was cool. Then we walked a few blocks until we got to the museum of the Peruvian version of the spanish inquisition. IT was really cool to hear a lot of the things i learned about in AP European history about the original Spanish inquisiton and the 3 Popes at the same time and stuff. And about Martin Luther, Zwingli, and Calvin. Anyway, they had one reoom that depicted the tortures they inflicted to try and make them confess. There was one where they tied your arms behind your back then lift you 15 feet in the air by your wrists, it destroys all the muscle and tissue in the arms. Then there was the stratching rack.... and some other stuff, way wierd.

wellthen we split up. Dad and Grandpa and a few others went back to the hotel, and two groups went to the Mall. It is supposed to be way beautiful and amazing. Well they got there and went to dinner then did some shopping. In my group ( me, Elena, Valerie, and Caitlin) got into a taxi, but halfway to the mall, stuck in bumper to bumper traffic, decided to take a 15 minute detour to see the Lima temple. It took 30 minutes, but that was ok. WE took some picutures, then got a book of mormon in spanish for our taxi driver. he was not LDS, but he said he loves to see the temple, and he really wanted a book of mormon. So we each wrote our name and favorite scripture on the inside of it. It was really cool, he was really excited. So then we went to the mall, but it was taking forever, and we werent hungry, so we ended up just going back to the hotel. But everywhere we went, the trafiic was buts, and we werent really moving. But there were buses that were all over the road, trying to squeeze into tiny gaps, etcetera, so we honestly hardly even were crawling. Instead of the 30 minutes to the mall and 40 minutes to the hotel for 15 soles, it turned out to be a 3 hour taxi ride for 100 soles. RIP OFF!!! we were feeling so sick from the fumes frim all the cars, it was not good. well, we got back, eventually, and we went and got ice cream (the most amazing banana split ever made) then i started to type it all up. Well, that is today. This is also the last time i will be writing about my escapades, for we leave peru early tomorrow morning. So long!!!

Ok, so this morning we woke up at about 5:30 this morning so we could leave the hotel at 6. We had to be at the airport to catch our flight from Cuzco to Juliaca at 7:20. We drove from Juliaca to Puno. then after we dropped off our baggage at the Hotel Plaza Mayor, we took little bike taxis and raced through town to Lake Titicaca. there is a joke about the name. The Peru side is the titi and the Bolivian side is the caca (poop) :). Well, we took a boat to the Floating Isles ( yes they really exist) and went to three of the islands, including Mormon Island. They really are floating Islands, because the people did not like others taking over their lands, so they created the Islands. The people take huge blocks of lake ground that are the roots blocks for reeds in the lake. So the dirt has lots of layers of reeds placed over the top, just places, and the reeds from the roots in the dirt grow and intertwine into the reeds and holds it together. Then, they untie from the land and it floats. They build everthing out of reeds. Seats, Houses, beds, everything. Once they had the original islands built, they were able to build more on the islands themselves. Now, there are 48 Islands, each with 8-10 families on it. It was really cool. Well, we went back to the hotel and rode in a Motorcycle taxi, really cool!! Then we did some shopping around the city. I found some really cool things. Well, i am really tired, and lots of people are waiting, that is why i am not going into very much detail about the Floating Islands and MachuPicchu.

Sorry, i ran out of time last night, but there are a few things you just cannot miss. So i will start with our arrival at Machupicchu. We met two guys on the train that had decided to come with us to machupicchu the next day. Juan decided to come and hike Waynapicchu early in the morning with us.

Anyway, when we arrived in the city, it was about 8 at night, but the moon was out and it was really bright. So we walked to the Hostal ( not hotel) where we were staying. But it turned out they didnt have enough space and some of us had to go to another hostal down the street and around the corner, where they had shifted our reservation. Well, Dad grandpa and i had the room on ground level, and there were about 3 stories of rooms above that. The thing was, above the first floor, the wall opposite the rooms were all blown out, and there was junk everywhere on the other side of the stairs!!! It was so nasty!! ok, and there were a few problems. First, i believe every single person in our group had left their flea collars in our other luggage!!! ( we had only packed an overnight bag.) so a lot of the girls were having problems with sleeping in the beds. As far as i know, almost all of them slept with just one sheet on them and all the blankets on the floor. But grandpa dad and i slept great, we used the blankets and still didnt get any fleas. Also, Valerie and Caitlin had a problem with their bathroom window. IT WOULDNT LOCK CLOSED!!! I ended up taking a chunk of tile from the constructiontools all over the ground. WE used it to brace the window shut.

So on Wednesday morning, 9 of us gathered at six to catch the bus up to MachuPicchu. We arrived up there at 6:30 planning to be at the top of Waynapicchu when the sun rose. But, the whole way up, we were completly surrounded in fog! We got to the gate to WaynaPicchu, but there was a huge line to get in. We werent able to get through the gate until 8:30!! But we made it in. They only let 200 people in at 7:00, and 200 at 10:00, but they only let them in a few at a time! We ended up barely making it, Dad was number 194, only 6 more people made it in!!!

The climb was beautiful, the fog made everything so surreal. We got t0 the top at about 9:00 ish, and the fog was just starting to clear. It was very Beautiful, but we couldnt really see Machupicchu. The top was really scary, it was so steep!!! Amazing. Well, It turned out Grandpa was the oldest person to hike that day, at 70 years old!! Well, most people were in their twenties, and we had them in the teens, the forties, and grandpa. It was awesome. Thenwe explored the ruins, it was amazing how much work the Incans were able to do on top of such a steep mountian!! They had been building it for 94 years, but never finished it. They abandoned it when they thought the Spaniards were invading. Anyway, I will post pics later so you can see.

We took the train back to Urubamba, then took a two hour drive to Cuzco, then slept for 5 hours at the Maybe Hotel.

Sorry i havent written for a few days, things have been pretty CrAzY!!! haha. ok, well, i guess the last time i had a chance to write was on sunday night, so i will start with MOnday.

Monday, August 11, 2008 (Day 6)

We woke up at around 6:30 on Monday morning, because we were doing things a bit different.

We had to leave by 7:30 because we were going out to work on the Farm for El Girasol (the sunflower, the name of the orphanage we were working at). One of the other groups that has been here in the past helped start a farm for El Girasol to help it be self sufficient. So, we ended up splitting into two groups, Dad Grandpa and I went back to the orphanage and everyone else went to the Farm. They were using pickaxes to dig a channel for water to reach a trout pond they are build, and they poured cement in some other places, i dont really know all the details. Anyway, We went to Girasol to help Antonio finish the Guardhouse we had started building earlier in the week. The basic structure was there, the walls and the windows and door, but it still needed the top half of the back wall, another few layers on the walls, and a roof. So we started to help finish it.

We started out by mixing a huge pile of mud using sand we had sifted on saturday and buckets of water from a rain barrel. This was used as a kind of mortar, wierd, i know. Then, we would give him buckets of Barro ( mud) which he would spread all over the adobe bricks already in place, then we would give him the bricks for the next layer. it was very cool because he uded a string and a weight as a plumbers line in order to keep everything level. Also, he was more or less balanced on the wall, and he would just keep standing on what he had just built in order to build the next level!! the back wall is what we mostly did, and it started about 5 feet tall, but when we were done it was like 15 feet high!!! at the top, he used a string tied to a bamboo pole to set the blocks so the wall ended in a point, like a triangle, but just on the one end. After we finished the wall, we had to use the new chainsaw grandpa had constructed ( with the help of about 10 adoring orphans) to cut up logs for the framework of the roof. We cut the logs into long segments, then had to carry them onto the roof and kinda piece it together so we knew where to cut the ends to make it sit solidly. We used the chainsaw to cut it. Then, we used big long nails (clavos) to hold them together. The shape of the roof was like one of those circular hawaian huts cut in half, like half an octagon.

As we worked, one of the boys, a 14 year old name John, was being adopted by a couple we had been working with, the Andersons. it was really cool to watch how the orphans and the adults handled the adoption. Each of the boys said something about their time together, then they would hug. It was so much fun to watch, one of those bitter/sweet moments. He had to leave his friends, but now he had a home in the USA. I was way happy for him.

Then we had a fiesta!!! We played games with all the little kids, but really they played, and we helped them figure it out. We had races, where they had a starburst on a spoon and had to run around a cone and back, then pass it to the next teammate. Then, We did a lot of different games with jumpropes that i learned. We had badmitton, tetherball, tons of stuff, the kids loved it!!! We were all extremly tired, but it was tons of fun!!

Ok, now for Tuesday August 12, 2008.

This was by far the most interesting day so far, i think. I think you will agree for obvious reasons.

Today we went to a small village called Tucson (Tuck-sawn) like in arizona. WE were going to help them pour cement for a new schoolhouse and help them bathe kids. The thing was, it was built on a fairly sttep hill with flat spots for houses. First, we had all the men get together. We had to take a cement mixer, and get it probably 200 yards uphill!!! it was so tough, but we found a way to get it up switchbacks!!! IT was a fair sized mixer!!

NExt, we had people take buckets, and we had to carry sand all the way up, ususally we could only take half a bucket at a time, because we had to go so far uphill, it was way hard, but all the peruvians were helping carry it up. ( right before we took the mixer up, we had to carry 90 pound bags of cement mix up the mountain to the schoolhouse) We finally got all the sand up after a few hours, but right as we were down to the last few bucketfulls, he drove up with a whole other truckload!!! He started to dump it there, but Grandpa and I convinced him to drive it up the same way we took the mixer. it was such a relief!! By this time, it was almost 12:00 noon. We had been there for hours!! ( this whole time, the women had been showing the village ladies how to bathe their kids with soap and tubs they had brought.) ONce we got the majority of the sand up there with the cement, we started to mix it up. We had four wheelbarrows going, one right after the other!! the wheelbarrows would get the cement, then you would have to get a running start to get it up part of this slope. Then you had to go into the schoolhouse (we had just finished laying big stones for a foundation) and go across the stones and dump the cement wherever the two guys who were spreading it out wanted it. All of this was happening at the same time.

We were supposed to be leaving for the orphanage at noon, but we didnt leave until 2ish becasue we had to finish the floor. When they were done, they had a ceremony where they hung a clay pot full of cement mix over the doorway, then Will Love and Dad got to break it using a hammer. It is considered the christening or something of the house. Then we went down to the main plaza of the village and they wanted to have us participate in some ceremony. It turned out that we had to dance with them to the music, and this one guys kept pulling the girls out of the chairs and dancing with them (he had like 1 tooth, and he was like 3 feet tall) they would dance and he would randomly start yelling!! it was way wierd. Then we sat and they brought out food for us to eat..... And you know that it is offensive if you dont eat it....

Well it turned out they had this really big pieces of corn and wierd nuts, but that was ok. Remember they dont have refrigerators... Next They brought out Cuy, Freshly caught and cooked. I have been looking forward to trying Cuy, but in a proffesional restaurant, not in some backwater town!!! Anyway for those who dont know, Cuy is basically Guinea Pig. There you go! Well, I ate it, and it was suprisingly good!! once i got past the fact that there was a little bit of fur on the end of the leg, and you could easily see the little claws on the end of the feet, i had two!!

After, we went back to Girasol for the last few hours we would get there. We helped put the bamboo poles on the roof, and nail them down. Them they were covered with mud and clay tiles for roofing, but we left before it was finished. Then we hopped on the train to Machupicchu.`

Well, I it is 12:30, and i am going to bed. I will write early tomorrow about today, If i can.

Congratulations Jake and Andrea!

Jake and Andrea are graduating from BYU on Friday! (Well actually Jake is graduating, but Andrea was right there with him all the way!) We are so proud of them and hope that their future graduate school plans will work out just the way they want them to. Their little family will be growing with the up-coming birth of "Henry" in November!

Way to go Jake and Andrea!
